Common Causes of Jet Ski Accidents

Jet skis are a fun and thrilling way to enjoy the open ocean. These vehicles have become very common due to their affordability, low maintenance costs, and ease of use. However, with the use of jet skis on the rise in the United States, the rate of jet ski-related accidents has also increased. These accidents can happen for many different reasons. Some of the most common causes of jet ski accidents include:

Reckless Driving

Reckless or careless driving is the most common cause of jet ski accidents. Reckless driving accounted for about 26.3% of all personal watercraft-related accidents in 2007, according to the National Transportation Safety Board in the US. Operating a watercraft at an excessive speed is an example of reckless driving that commonly leads to accidents. Unsafe jet ski operation also includes becoming airborne while crossing the wake of another vehicle and weaving through congested traffic.

Driver Inexperience

Renting a jet ski is very easy: experience is not required and the rental rarely comes with a safety course. Most vacationers who rent a jet ski on the beach have little to no experience, which can lead to risky maneuvers. Driver inexperience is the second leading cause of jet ski-related accidents.

Intoxication

Jet skiing has become a common recreational activity for vacationers. The recreational nature of jet skiing often goes hand in hand with alcohol consumption. When people on vacation feel carefree and uninhibited, they may make decisions they normally would not choose in their everyday life. Operating a jet ski after consuming alcohol is never a good idea. This decision often leads to serious accidents because the driver’s motor skills are impaired and their judgement is clouded.

Because jet skiers are unprotected from the hazards involved in the activity, the results of an accident can be devastating. Jet ski accidents can cause serious injuries and sometimes death. If you or someone you love has been involved in a jet ski accident, it is important to find a strong personal injury lawyer. The legal team at the The Bruner Law Firm has years of experience representing victims of personal watercraft accidents and will do everything to ensure we defend and protect your rights.
